Course Description

Come and learn to sew an indigo dress from Tilly and the Buttons .

This class is a great introduction to dressmaking.

Indigo has a bodice shaped with bust darts, gently curved empire waistline, and floaty gathered skirt. Make it as a top with dipped hem ending at the low hip, or a knee-length dress with straight hem and pockets. Choose from three-quarter flounce sleeves or slim-fitting bracelet sleeves. Sew it with classic gathered seams or elevate it to a stand-out piece in your wardrobe with the pretty exposed frill seam. You’ll want to wear one every day of the week.

What skills will I learn?

  • Measuring yourself correctly and choosing the correct pattern size
  • Understanding a sewing pattern
  • Cutting out your pattern and fabric accurately
  • Sewing darts
  • Adding in seam pockets
  • Adding a facing
  • Using interfacing
  • Inserting a sleeve
  • Gathering
  • Hemming

Please note we may not have time to do the exposed frill seam option in this class, but you’ll have the pattern and full instructions to use for another version.

What’s included in the price of the course?

  • Studio at Number 30 tote bag to all new members
  • Use of premium sewing tools
  • Paper pattern and step by step instruction booklet
  • 0.3m fusible interfacing
  • Use of standard colour sewing threads (black, navy blue, white and cream)
  • Full tuition to make your garment during the course and after through our closed Facebook group
  • Hot drinks and afternoon cake on both days
  • Subscription to our resources centre on the studio website
  • Membership of our closed Facebook group

What do I need to bring?

  • Fabric – 2.5m of 150cm wide, or 3m of 115cm wide (for the flounce sleeve you will need 3.3m if your fabric is 115cm wide) light- to medium-weight drapey fabric. We suggest cotton lawn, chambray or soft washed denim, especially if this is your first dressmaking project. If you have sewn a couple of dressmaking projects before, you could use a viscose or crepe with more drape. (If you’re not sure, please contact us.)
  • Matching thread – we provide a wide choice of coloured threads to use during the class, but if there is a specific colour match you would like, we have a wide range for sale in the studio.
  • You will need to bring your own packed lunch on both days. Hot drinks and water will be available throughout the day.

Pattern Sizing

The Indigo dress pattern is UK 8–24, the body measurements range from a 30” to 48” bust and 24” to 42” waist.  If you fall outside of these measurements, please contact us prior to booking.
