Course Description

Have you always wanted to learn to sew? Or forgotten the basics? Do you have a sewing machine in a box that you would love to use but are a bit scared? Why not come along to our 5-week machine beginners’ course? This course is the first of a series of courses designed to teach the basic foundations for any seamstress.

What skills will I learn?

  • Identify parts of a sewing machine.
  • Thread a machine and wind a bobbin.
  • Change a needle.
  • Choose different presser feet according to the task.
  • Alter stitch length and widths
  • Examine different ways of neatening a seam including pinking, zigzagged, over-edge stitched, turned under, overlocked, bound and Honk Kong finished.
  • Learn how to construct and practice different types of seams including plain seams, open and closed, french, run and fell.
  • Learn and practise insertion of a centred and invisible zip.
  • Learn and practise machined, automatic and corded buttonholes.
  • How to make a cushion cover

Each week we start with a mini masterclass to demonstrate each of the above techniques. Practising these skills will help you gain confidence with the machine and explore its capabilities. During weeks 4 and 5 we make a 40cm x 40cm cushion cover using all our newfound skills!

Skill level – Beginner/Improver

This course is suitable for complete beginners who have little or no experience using a domestic sewing machine. It is a great course for those who are looking to start making their own clothes or which to pursue a career in fashion.

Our sewing classes are relaxed and friendly, taking place at our beautiful studio. Class sizes are kept small to ensure everyone gets the time and attention they need. This does mean that booking is essential. The course will only run if there are sufficient numbers.
