Course Description

Have you always wanted to learn to sew? Or forgotten the basics? Do you have a sewing machine in a box that you would love to use but are a bit scared? Why not come along to our 6 week machine beginners’ course? This course is the first of a series of courses designed to teach the basic foundations for any seamstress.

What skills will I learn?

  • Identify parts of a sewing machine.
  • Thread a machine and wind a bobbin.
  • Change a needle.
  • Choose different presser feet according to the task.
  • Alter stitch length and widths
  • Examine different ways of neatening a seam including pinking, zigzagged, over-edge stitched, turned under, overlocked, bound and Honk Kong finished.
  • Learn how to construct and practice different types of seams including plain seams, open and closed, french, run and fell.
  • Learn and practise insertion of a centred and invisible zip.
  • Learn and practise machined, automatic and corded buttonholes.
  • How to make a cushion cover

Each week we start with a mini masterclass to demonstrate each of the above techniques. Practising these skills will help you gain confidence with the machine and explore its capabilities. During week 6 we make a 40cm x 40cm cushion cover using all our newfound skills!
