Course Description

This is a 5 week evening course, the first in a series of courses designed to teach the basic foundations for any garment maker. It is designed with beginners in mind or for those who would like a refresher of the basics.

What skills will I learn?

  • Identify parts of a sewing machine.
  • Thread a machine and wind a bobbin.
  • Change a needle.
  • Choose different presser feet according to the task.
  • Alter stitch length and widths
  • Examine different ways of neatening a seam including pinking, zigzagged, over-edge stitched, turned under, overlocked, bound and Honk Kong finished.
  • Learn how to construct and practice different types of seams including plain seams, open and closed, french, run and fell.
  • Learn and practise insertion of a centred and invisible zip.
  • Learn and practise machined, automatic and corded buttonholes.

During your lessons you will be giving mini masterclasses to demonstrate each of the above techniques.
