Course Description

Have you always wanted to learn to sew? Or forgotten the basics? Do you have a sewing machine in a box that you would love to use but are a bit scared? Why not come along to our 6 week machine beginners’ course? This course is the first of a series of courses designed to teach the basic foundations for any seamstress.

What skills will I learn?

  • Identify parts of a sewing machine.
  • Thread a machine and wind a bobbin.
  • Change a needle.
  • Choose different presser feet according to the task.
  • Alter stitch length and widths
  • Examine different ways of neatening a seam including pinking, zigzagged, over-edge stitched, turned under, overlocked, bound and Honk Kong finished.
  • Learn how to construct and practice different types of seams including plain seams, open and closed, french, run and fell.
  • Learn and practise insertion of a centred and invisible zip.
  • Learn and practise machined, automatic and corded buttonholes.

Each week we start with a mini masterclass to demonstrate each of the above techniques. Practising these skills will help you gain confidence with the machine and explore its capabilities. You will produce samples of your techniques which you can stick into your workbook for future reference.

What’s included in the price of the course?

  • A Course workbook will be sent to you which includes all the information you will need for your course plus space for you to include the samples that you produce during the course.
  • Course Kit – This will include calico fabric and zips to allow you to practise the techniques shown to you on the course this will also be sent out to you.
  • 6 x 2hr sessions via zoom with your tutor
  • Inclusion in a WhatsApp group for the duration of the course
  • Membership of our closed Facebook group

How does it work

The class will take place in a ‘virtual classroom’ using the video meeting software Zoom. You will need to have Zoom installed on the device you intend to use for the class, it’s free and easy to use. If you haven’t used Zoom before we suggest you have a practice before the class. Please download the free version via this link https://zoom.us/meetings

  • We have several cameras to make your zoom experience the best possible
  • We also suggest choosing a quiet area to set up your machine next to your device. To achieve the best internet connection please reduce as many items as you can that are connected to your router.
  • You will receive an email link once you have signed up that will take you directly to the class. All you need to do is click on the link just before we are due to start. We suggest signing in 10 mins before the start time, you will be held in a virtual waiting room.
  • We encourage you to turn on your own video and audio so we can interact, and you can ask us questions – the idea is that it’s as much like an in-person class as possible!
